Haripada Dutta

Haripada Dutta, a visionary with a profound belief in the transformative power of education, embarked on a journey that would leave a lasting legacy in the realm of technical education and youth development in India. Born and raised in Mymensingh, Haripada passed his matriculation examination with flying colors before moving to Dhaka for further studies. It was here, in the bustling capital, that he excelled in the FA exam and caught the attention of a distinguished British railway official named Mr. George. Recognizing Haripada’s innate talent and dedication, Mr. George offered him hands-on training in Morse code, signaling, and various aspects of railway operations, including roles such as Station Master and Guard.

Late Shri Haripada Dutta

Impressed by Haripada’s adeptness and skill, Mr. George saw in him the potential to disseminate this knowledge widely. He proposed that Haripada establish a college for technical education, emphasizing the urgent need for skilled personnel in the railway sector. Haripada was entrusted with the mission of teaching Indian students the valuable skills he had acquired, ensuring their employability in the burgeoning railway industry.

GTTI Sealdah

Fuelled by Mr. George’s encouragement and trust, Haripada founded the Vocational Training Center in Dhaka, Upper Bengal (then East Bengal). This pioneering institution, with its focus on practical skills like railway Morse code, signaling, and other vocational trainings, quickly gained renown. Students who completed courses at the center found apprenticeships and jobs in the railways, contributing to the institution’s growing reputation and success. Haripada’s dedication led to the expansion of the center, with branches opening in Mymensingh and Chittagong’s Kaibalyadham.

Despite facing challenges, including the usurpation of his institute in Kaibalyadham by a cousin, Haripada remained undeterred. His commitment to empowering the neglected and underprivileged youth through technical education drove him to relocate across the river Padma, armed with little more than a vision and his mother’s gold bangles for funding.

In 1920, Haripada established the George Telegraph Training Institute in Bengal, naming it in honor of Mr. George. Starting with humble beginnings on the circular road towards Rajabazar Science College, Haripada built the institute from the ground up, purchasing necessary equipment and welcoming students to this new bastion of learning. His dedication extended beyond academic instruction; he personally maintained the premises, embodying the ethos of hard work and perseverance. The George Telegraph Training Institute was one of the first Institutes in India to be run by Indian entrepreneur and it’s employees were British citizens.

Success of George Telegraph Sports Club

Haripada’s belief in the dual path of youth development—education and sports—led to the founding of the George Telegraph Sports Club in 1925. He recognized that sports could foster discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness, complementing academic pursuits. The club quickly became a nurturing ground for talented footballers and contributed significantly to the sports landscape.

Throughout his life, Haripada Dutta was not only a scholar and educator but also a passionate supporter of sports and social service, he also secretly funded and supported many freedom fighters during the freedom movement. His contributions to technical education and sports in India remain a testament to his vision of empowering youth to lead dignified and prosperous lives.
