The primary operation of Shalimar’s Coconut oil had begun at a humble two room production unit in the Chetla region of Kolkata.
It was in pre-independence India that a youth from Kolkata took the decision to set up an independent business.
Avenues were limited in those days and the only capital available for this youth was a burning desire to make it big and also to take the path less trodden by, so far as it was concerned, regarding the choice of his trade. And history would possibly authenticate the fact that 23 year old Prakritinath Bhattacharjee was the first Bengali businessman to see the real business potential of a good brand in the coconut oil category in Eastern India.
Hence began the journey of Shalimar’s Coconut oil in the year 1941 and within four years Prakritinath Bhattacharjee found his ideal business partner, Sri Panchanan Mondal who had the financial resource to give the much needed boost to the expansion plans Prakritinath had chalked.

In 1990, the brand expanded its product line to include a range of skincare solutions, harnessing the nourishing properties of coconut for radiant beauty.
But it was in the dawn of the new millennium, in 2005, when Shalimar Coconut Oil soared to new heights of success. With the introduction of its haircare line enriched with coconut extracts, Shalimar became synonymous with lustrous locks and healthy scalps across the country.
Driven by Bhattacharjee’s unwavering vision, Shalimar Coconut Oil ventured into the culinary realm in 2010, captivating taste buds with the pure essence of coconut in every dish. On 29th April 2022, Shalimar Chemical Works Pvt. Ltd. announced the signing of an agreement titled, Bengal to Brisbane with its partners in Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, and the Fijian Islands through Adzguru Trade Connecting Service. The agreement came to life in the presence of SCWPL’s Managing Director, Mr. Somenath Bhattacharjee and Mr Arijit Roy, the CEO of Adzguru as they both signed the export contract.
Today, as Shalimar Coconut Oil graces households worldwide, its journey remains intertwined with the legacy of Prakritinath Bhattacharjee. His tireless pursuit of excellence and reverence for tradition continues to inspire, reminding us that the purest treasures are often found in nature’s embrace.
Shalimar’s has evolved into a national and worldwide brand that has lasted through multiple generations. Currently, Shri Somenath Bhattacharjee is acting as the Managing Director of Shalimar while Shri Tilok Bhattacharjee, Shri Kushal Bhattacharjee & Shri Hirak Bhattacharjee are serving as the directors of the company.
